Here is the syllabus for ADPR 3520/Tues./Thursday. Click the link to print the syllabus or to read about class policies. I will announce any changes to our schedule on this page.

Week 1: January 5
Thursday, 12:30–1:45: Course introduction • Fill out index card • Get to know your design team.  
Homework for Tuesday: Read: pgs. 1 & 2, “What is Graphic Design?”; pgs. 15–28, “Steal Like an Artist.” 
Homework for Thursday: You have a week to do these readings: Read pgs. 29–33, new identity for New York City Ballet. Do this next reading carefully and take some notes, which I’ll check on Thursday for a homework grade. Almost all that you need to know about type for our class is in this reading. Read pgs. 36–63, excerpt from “Thinking with Type” and pg. 65, “Typography Rules!”

Week 2: January 9
Tuesday, 11–1:45: What is Graphic Design? • Design brief • Concept MAP • Chickenow project
Thursday, 12:30–1:45: Check of notes • Discussion of New York City Ballet identity • Type Crimes • Practice with InDesign and type 
Homework: For Thursday, complete type homework • Flip through pgs. 105–114 from “Mastering Type” to see if there is anything new to you.

Week 3: January 16
Tuesday, 11–1:45: Type Classification • Downtown Signs • Begin InDesign tutorial using Garden & Gun 
Thursday, 12:30–1:45:  Type homework due • Finish G&G tutorial
Homework: For Tuesday, read pgs. 122–124, “Basic Design”; pgs.130–137, “Using space” and “Grouping”; pgs. 158–161 “Horror Vacui” and “Proximity.” For Thursday, read pgs. 138–143, “Attention” and “Structure & Alignment”, pgs. 156 & 157 “Consistency”; pgs. 56–61 paying attention mostly to the idea of grids.

Week 4: January 23
Tuesday, 11–1:45: Positive & Negative Space • symmetry & asymmetry • proximity • Practice with InDesign
Thursday, 12:30–1:45: Hierarchy, Repetition, Contrast, Alignment & Grids
Homework: Study for next week’s type quiz. 

Week 5: January 30
Tuesday, 11–1:45: Quiz on type (We will only take the quiz, and then leave because I have to travel to Washington, D.C. with Grady students.) 
Thursday, 12:30–1:45: Class will NOT meet. Instead, read pgs. 115–118, excerpt from “Just My Type”; and pgs. 119–120 on Helvetica. Watch some of Helvetica (I’ll tell you which parts) on Lynda.com and complete homework due on Tuesday. 

Week 6: February 6
Tuesday, 11–1:45: Helvetica homework due • Professional documents • Read over specs for résumé assignment • Résumé workshop
Homework:  Prepare your résumé information; and research résumé designs
Thursday, 12:30–1:45: Begin working on your résumé.

Week 7: February 13
Tuesday, 11–1:45: Continue working on your résumé • Critiques of résumés so far by me and by your design team.
Thursday, 12:30–1:45: Turn in your résumé assignment by the end of lab • if you finish early, and if you feel comfortable doing so, place your redesigned résumé on the table so we can all look at them together.
Homework: Read this short piece on The New York Times blog, Lens (http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/12/obama-image-copyright-case-is-settled/). Watch the short video about Creative Commons at this site http://creativecommons.org/about. Read pgs. 125–129 and pgs. 144–147, excerpts from “Graphic Design for Non-designers”; pgs. 151 & 152, “Bitmaps and Vectors”; read over pg. 149 for the general idea. In the next few days, go to Lynda.com and to the class “Photoshop CC Essential Training 2015” by Julieanne Kost and watch the following in this order: in chapter 1, “Welcome” (that gives a quick overview of many of the things you can do in PS); in chapter 12, “Introducing adjustment layers” in chapter 9, “Blending images together using layer masks”; “Painting in layer masks . . .” “Selecting soft edge objects using refine edge”​

Week 8: February 20
Tuesday, 11–1:45: Discussion of copyright & where to find images and artwork • understanding resolution and how to prepare images in Photoshop • practice downloading & prepping images
Homework: Study for quiz. 
Thursday, 12:30–1:45: QUIZ over design principles & copyright. • Introduction to Photoshop
Homework: Go to Lynda.com and to the class “Photoshop CC Essential Training 2015” by Julieanne Kost and watch the following in this order: in chapter 1, “Welcome” (that gives a quick overview of many of the things you can do in PS); in chapter 12, “Introducing adjustment layers” in chapter 9, “Blending images together using layer masks”; “Painting in layer masks . . .” “Selecting soft edge objects using refine edge”

Week 9: February 27
Tuesday, 11–1:45: Practice with Photoshop & InDesign • Go over project specs for story spread
Homework: Read pgs. 177–179 (it’s about color) and pgs. 181–182, “Chromotophobia”; read pgs. 213 & 214, “Anatomy of a magazine layout”
Thursday, 12:30–1:45: Color
Homework: Read over project specs for story spread and choose a story. Over spring break, read your story carefully. Prepare ideas, sketches, and images so that you are ready to begin on the Tuesday after spring break.

Week 10: March 6 Spring break this week

Week 11: March 13
Tuesday, 11–1:45: Begin work on story spread 
Homework: For Thursday of next week, Photoshop compositing assignment is due. I will give you the files. Use pages 200–205 of class packet. You may stop at Step 10. 
Thursday, 12:30–1:45: Continue work on story spread.  

Week 12: March 20
Tuesday, 11–1:45: Story spread is due at the end of lab • take Photoshop files for homework due next week
Homework: Photoshop homework is due next week.
Thursday, 12:30–1:45: Photoshop homework is due • Look at some of the story spreads and critique them • Go over book cover assignment.
Homework: Get together elements for your book cover. Come to class on Tuesday with direction. Also, for Tuesday, go to Lynda.com and to the class “Illustrator CC Essential Training 2015” by Justin Seeley and watch the following: in chapter 1, “What is Adobe Illustrator”; in chapter 5, Understanding Vector Paths; in chapter 11, Pen Tool Basics, Drawing Curves with the Pen Tool, Avoiding the whips with the pen tool. Read over book cover specs. Study for next week’s quiz.

Week 13: March 27
Tuesday, 11–1:45: Photoshop homework is due • Illustrator (we will cover the pen tool, live trace, expanding). Set up of the book cover together and begin work on your design.
Thursday, 12:30–1:45: Continue working on the book cover. 

Week 14: April 3
Tuesday, 11–1:45: Continue working on the book cover and critiques of book covers so far. During this period, each design team will give feedback to its members. I will also give feedback. 
Homework: Study for next week’s quiz
Thursday, 12:30–1:45: Book cover is due. If you finish early, and feel comfortable displaying your work, place your printed piece on the table for others to look at.

Week 15: April 10
Tuesday, 11–1:45: QUIZ over resolution & color • Go over project specs for social media graphic or poster and set up document • Begin research/work
Thursday, 12:30–1:45: Continue work on social media graphic/poster 

Week 16: April 17
Tuesday, 11–1:45: Continue work on social media graphic/poster 
Thursday, 12:30–1:45: Social media graphic or poster is due.

Week 17: April 24
Tuesday, 11–1:45: Make any corrections to projects and take your packaged files with you so that you have access to them in the future. 


No final exam. Enjoy the summer.
